About this award

Acme Atronomatic, LLC will develop an orbital data platform to improve wildfire resilience through a $300,000 National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Small Business Innovation Research Program Project Grant awarded September 1, 2022 for completion by February 28, 2023. Leveraging hyperspectral measurements from its CubeSats, Acme will generate dynamic wildfire risk maps at relevant spatial and temporal scales to clarify resilience tradeoffs for stakeholders. The AI-enhanced data from these low-cost, miniaturized satellites provide insights about evolving land and vegetation properties to produce risk maps and outreach materials contextualizing wildfire-related hazards. This supports the NOAA SBIR Program's goals of stimulating technological innovation to meet federal research needs and increasing commercialization of results.

Description

With a changing climate and near-urban environments, resilience requires access to actionable information about how to build, move, and/or fortify homes and communities: the proposed project would increase the resilience of stakeholders by clarifying through unique data the tradeoffs, risks, and likely outcomes when facing such decisions. The AI-enhanced hyperspectral measurements from acmes cubesats (low-cost, miniaturized satellites), currently under development, provide insights about land and vegetation properties as they evolve on relevant length (10S of meters) and time (days) scales. With careful preflight validation and inorbit calibration, these cubesats may be used to generate dynamic risk maps for wildfire-related destructive forces that evolve at the same scales as the underlying phenomena. The risk maps, along with media outreach to context
