Project Grant NA22OAR0210501
- The Tampa Deep Sea Xplorers LLC (TDSX) will develop a compact underwater light detection and ranging (LIDAR) system for integration into small remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) and autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) under a $128,918 Phase I Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) project grant from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The Phase I SBIR project will prove the feasibility of reducing the size and weight of a LIDAR system for internal installation in...
- Field Data Services LLC will conduct a $297,032 technical feasibility study under a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Program project grant from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Department of Commerce. The study aims to determine the commercial viability of a new solid state lidar sensor chip for detecting migrating anadromous fish in small spawning streams. Field Data Services will build an automated test system to characterize the lidar's ability to detect...
- The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) awarded a $249,990 Cooperative Agreement under the USGS Research and Data Collection program (CFDA 15.808) to the University of Oklahoma's Office of Research Administration. This 3-year project will operationalize two fixed-mount, laser scanning (LIDAR) instruments to measure cross-sectional channel geometry in shallow rivers with frequently changing geomorphologies. The data collected will be integrated into USGS workflows to produce real-time, stage-area...
- This National Science Foundation (NSF) Technology, Innovation, and Partnerships (TIP) program (CFDA 47.084) Project Grant award of $550,000 to Northeastern University is for the development of compact, coherent hydrophone array systems for real-time, wide-area ocean acoustic monitoring. The project aims to translate the Passive Ocean Acoustic Waveguide Remote Sensing (POAWRS) technology, which uses advanced hydrophone arrays to provide continental-scale ocean sensing capabilities, into...
- The Tcarta Marine LLC federal Project Grant from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Program will support $399,126 in optimization of high resolution multispectral satellite imagery collection and multi-sensor integration for through-the-water space-based seafloor imaging. Funded from February 1, 2021 to October 31, 2023, this SBIR Program award under the NOAA aims to advance coastal hydrographic surveying through custom sensor...
- This Project Grant from the National Science Foundation Division of Ocean Sciences provides $118,677 to support research titled "COLLABORATIVE RESEARCH: AN AUTONOMOUS PROFILING VEHICLE FOR CONCURRENT ACOUSTIC, VISUAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL MEASUREMENTS IN THE MESOPELAGIC OCEAN." The award runs from September 1, 2021 through August 31, 2024. The funding will allow researchers at Stony Brook University, working through the university's Research Foundation, to develop an autonomous...
- This Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Division of Environmental Biology, under CFDA Program 47.074 Biological Sciences, is providing $103,398 to Florida International University (FIU) to develop a novel seafloor sensor/sampler system and associated machine learning control systems. The goal is to better understand how tidal pumping and subsurface currents influence seafloor oxygenation and sedimentary carbon cycling. The project will provide mentoring and field...
- The National Science Foundation (NSF) awarded a $275,000 Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase I project grant to Crabline Robotics LLC, a woman-owned small business, to develop a dexterous, crab-like aquatic robot platform for underwater construction and decommissioning of structures. The project seeks to create a new class of aquatic robotics capable of stabilizing around a target and precisely delivering tools, such as exothermic cutting rods, to underwater structures. This...
- This Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation's Geosciences Program (CFDA 47.050) provides $1,354,056 to the University of California San Diego Scripps Institution of Oceanography to jointly implement a new measurement technique called distributed acoustic sensing. This technique will generate high-resolution (10 m in space, minutes in time) images of ocean temperature and current velocity fields above a 34-km cable laid on the seafloor off the Azores islands. The goal is to...
- Tridentis Advanced Marine Vehicles LLC and the Watershed Innovation Laboratory at Washington College will develop technology and monitoring solutions for near-shore aquaculture installations under a $149,865 project grant from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Specifically, the awardees will establish baseline water quality and shellfish testing for aquaculture farms, then develop an efficient and cost-effective material solution to continuously monitor environmental...
LIDAR HAS REVOLUTIONIZED THE COLLECTION OF ARCHEOLOGICAL, GEOGRAPHICAL, AND CARTOGRAPHIC DATA ON DRY LAND. ITS USE BELOW THE WATER'S SURFACE HOWEVER HAS BEEN SEVERELY LIMITED. TAMPA DEEP SEA XPLORERS (TDSX) IS PROPOSING TO DEVELOP A COMPACT UNDERWATER LIDAR SYSTEM FOR USE ON SMALL ROVS AND AUVS. TDSX PROPOSES TO CONTINUE THE PHASE 1 COLLABORATIVE EFFORT BETWEEN TDSX AND BEAMSEA ASSOCIATES TO COMPLETE DEVELOPMENT OF A LIDAR SYSTEM TO ACCURATELY AND RELIABLY COLLECT DATA FROM SMALL AUVS. THE PROPOSED PROJECT WILL USE DATA AND KNOWLEDGE GAINED IN PHASE 1 TO BUILD, TEST, AND COMMERCIALIZE THE COMPACT LIDAR SYSTEM. THE PHASE 2 PROJECT WILL CONTINUE THE WORK USING THE TDSX BARRACUDA AUV PLATFORM, WHICH IS SUITABLE TO PROVE THAT A LIGHTWEIGHT COMPACT LIDAR SYSTEM CAN BE INTEGRATED, INTERNALLY OR AS AN ADD ON MODULE, INTO MICRO AND MINI-ROVS/AUVS. THE PROPOSED RESEARCH HAS THE POTENTIAL TO PUT A STATE-OF-THE-ART DATA COLLECTION PLATFORM INTO THE HANDS OF INDIVIDUALS, SMALL INSTITUTIONS, AND RE
