Project Grant NA22OAR0210497
- The Department of Commerce National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration awarded Stratosolutions Inc. a $150,000 Project Grant under the NOAA Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Program on September 1, 2021 to be completed by February 28, 2022. The grant funds Stratosolutions Inc. to integrate miniaturized dropsondes onto high altitude pseudo-satellite unmanned aerial vehicles to validate weather data collection capabilities not currently possible. Dropsondes are one of the only viable...
- The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) awarded Windborne Systems Inc. $886,375.16 under the Weather and Air Quality Research program (CFDA 11.459) for a cooperative agreement running from August 1, 2021 to March 31, 2023. Windborne will utilize its high-altitude balloon platform to conduct observation campaigns evaluating the impact of atmospheric data collection on forecast skill. The company's long endurance balloons can actively control altitude from sea level to the...
- The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) awarded a $500,000 Cooperative Agreement under the Weather and Air Quality Research program (CFDA 11.459) to Windborne Systems Inc., a small business based in Palo Alto, California. The funding supports the development of four key capabilities for Windborne's Global Sounding Balloon (GSB) platform: A dropsonde capable of measuring temperature, relative humidity, pressure, and wind speed/direction that can be deployed from the GSB....
- The Massachusetts Institute of Technology Lincoln Laboratory will provide aircraft-derived atmospheric observations to improve weather forecasting models under a $520,500 cooperative agreement from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Through the award's two-year period, MIT Lincoln Laboratory will extract meteorological data from commercial aircraft equipped with Mode S transponders using airport surveillance radars. This effort aims to increase the number, spatial resolution,...
- The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) awarded a $1,299,988 Project Grant under its Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program to Space Balloon Technologies Corp, doing business as Spaceloon. The grant supports the development of Spaceloon's novel Controlled Altitude Ballooning (CAB) platform, which can perform bi-directional sampling across atmospheric layers from the troposphere to the mesosphere. The CAB technology involves a hardware and software combination that...
- This Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Geosciences Program (CFDA 47.050) to Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Inc. in the amount of $374,070 aims to better understand how different types of precipitation in tropical cyclones impact their maximum sustained wind speeds. The 4-year project will use airborne Doppler radar data and numerical weather prediction models to examine how precipitation modes, such as convection and stratiform rain, perturb the kinematic...
- The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration awarded Dragoon Technology LLC $599,555.33 under the Small Business Innovation Research Program to develop a lightweight, long endurance unmanned aircraft system for tropical cyclone meteorological data collection. The SBIR program seeks to stimulate technological innovation through small business partnerships to meet federal research needs. Specifically, Dragoon will develop a sub-30 pound unmanned aircraft with over 24 hours of flight...
- This $5,500,000 Project Grant award from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), under the Congressionally-Identified Projects program (CFDA 11.617), aims to increase knowledge about local weather systems in the lower atmosphere. The key activities include: Developing a method to standardize and trace commercial UAS and advanced air mobility (AAM) atmospheric measurements, as well as protocols and standards for the Unmanned Aircraft Meteorological Data Report. Evaluating...
- The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration awarded Improving Aviation LLC $299,668 under the Small Business Innovation Research Program to develop a fully automated wind observing system called WINDTL. The system will allow for measurements of local wind velocity components and statistics near wildfire fronts with improved temporal and spatial resolution compared to existing satellite and weather model data. With a completion date of February 28, 2023, the project aims to provide higher...
- This three-year, $405,234 Project Grant from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration will fund research at the University of Colorado Boulder to develop initialization strategies for the Unified Forecast System coupled atmosphere-ocean numerical forecast model. The goal is to improve probabilistic skill scores for subseasonal-to-seasonal forecasts of 2-8 weeks by ensuring initial ensemble perturbations project onto oscillating eigenfunctions of the Koopman and Perron-Frobenius...
THERE IS A CLEAR NEED TO IMPROVE WEATHER FORECASTING ACCURACY. THE GREATEST CONTRIBUTIONS TO FORECAST UNCERTAINTY IS A LACK OF METEOROLOGICAL OBSERVATIONS OVER REMOTE AREAS AND AREAS EXPERIENCING PRONOUNCED CONVECTIVE ACTIVITY. STRATOSOLUTIONS' NEW HIGH-ALTITUDE BALLOON (HAB) PLATFORM WITH MINI-DROPSONDE IS A DISRUPTIVE NEW UNCREWED METEOROLOGICAL OBSERVATION DATA SOURCE ABLE TO COLLECT DATA AT REGULAR INTERVALS OVER THE COURSE OF SEVERAL DAYS FROM REMOTE REGIONS IN A COST-EFFECTIVE MANNER. THIS WILL RESULT IN RELIABLE AND ACCURATE OBSERVATIONS WITH HIGH VERTICAL RESOLUTION FROM REMOTE AREAS OF THE GLOBE BENEFIT MULTIPLE INDUSTRIES AND PROVIDE IMPROVED EARLY FORECASTING. IN THIS EFFORT, HAB LAUNCH CAMPAIGNS WILL BE PERFORMED TARGETING TROPICAL STORMS IN THE ATLANTIC AND ATMOSPHERIC RIVERS IN THE PACIFIC. WEATHER DATA WILL BE COLLECTED AND ASSIMILATED INTO WEATHER MODELS TO DETERMINE FORECAST IMPROVEMENT AGAINST EXISTING FORECASTS AND ACTUAL WEATHER CONDITIONS.
