Project Grant NA22OAR0210496
- This Project Grant from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Small Business Innovation Research Program totaling $150,000 will support the development of rapid diagnostic tests for the parasitic infection Amyloodinium ocellatum in fish. Live Advantage Bait, LLC dba Totally Pelagic will utilize next generation approaches to produce highly specific monoclonal antibodies for A. ocellatum dinospores and develop a lateral flow-based rapid diagnostic test. The NOAA SBIR program...
- This Project Grant award from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) under the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) / Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) Program (CFDA 10.212) provides $649,763 to Varigen Biosciences Corp to develop the AQPATHDX kit. This novel multiplex molecular diagnostic assay enables rapid, on-site detection of the most common catfish and tilapia pathogens in less than 30 minutes. The AQPATHDX kit utilizes...
- This $389,782 Cooperative Agreement award from the United States Department of Agriculture's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS), under the Plant and Animal Disease, Pest Control, and Animal Care program (CFDA 10.025), aims to develop highly specific and validated TaqMan assays for the simultaneous detection of two critical shrimp diseases: Hepatopancreatic Microsporidiosis (HPM) caused by Enterocytozoon hepatopenaei (EHP) and Acute Hepatopancreatic Necrosis Disease (AHPND) caused...
- This $200,000 Cooperative Agreement award from the USDA's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) under the Plant and Animal Disease, Pest Control, and Animal Care program (CFDA 10.025) supports the development of rapid detection methods for novel fish diseases that may emerge due to the growth of intensive aquaculture systems. The primary objective is to enable effective response and recovery measures to protect food security. The award recipient, Washington State University, has a...
- The Nucleic Sensing Systems LLC was awarded a $175,000 Project Grant from the United States Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture under the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Program / Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) Program (CFDA 10.212). Through this funding, Nucleic Sensing Systems will develop autonomous biosensing technologies to monitor threats from the spread of diseases and pathogens in aquaculture. Specifically, the company will complete...
- This Project Grant award from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) under the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Program (CFDA 10.212) provides $649,892 to Phycovax LLC to develop a novel diatom-based oral vaccine to protect fish against lactococcosis, a bacterial disease affecting trout farming in the United States. The project aims to engineer microalgae (diatoms) to produce vaccine proteins that can be incorporated into fish feed,...
- The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) awarded a $341,763 Cooperative Agreement to Iowa State University's Center for Food Security and Public Health (CFSPH) to develop a free, online, mobile-friendly field guide for 36 high-risk aquatic animal diseases listed in the World Organization for Animal Health Aquatic Animal Health Code and the USDA National List of Reportable Animal Diseases. This field guide will provide aquaculture producers and their...
- This Project Grant award, funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) National Institute of Food and Agriculture under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) program (CFDA 10.310), focuses on advancing knowledge and developing solutions to address disease and health management challenges in the growing U.S. aquaculture industry. The $649,995 award, spanning from September 1, 2024 to August 31, 2027, supports research to study the mechanisms of immune response and...
- The Trustees of the University of Pennsylvania received a $625,000 Project Grant award from the US Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative competitive grants program. The two-year project aims to identify and characterize immunobiotics for fish that specifically enhance mucosal immune function and disease resistance. The researchers will select immunobiotics found naturally in fish mucosa and test their ability to...
- This $1,016,000.00 Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Technology, Innovation, and Partnerships (CFDA 47.084) program will fund the development and application of a low-cost, portable biosensing platform for detecting and monitoring waterborne pathogens in aquaculture and coastal environments. The University of Massachusetts Lowell, as the prime awardee, will lead the effort to adapt its patented biosensing technology to enable real-time pathogen detection and...
ONE OF THE MOST PROMINENT CHALLENGES FOR THE SAFE CULTIVATION AND MAINTENANCE OF ANIMALS IS CONTROL OF INFECTIOUS DISEASES. A. OCELLATUM IS A PARASITIC INFECTION THAT IMPACTS ALL FISH WITHIN THE WIDE ENVIRONMENTAL RANGE RESULTING IN MASS MORALITIES IN CAPTIVITY. WITH A BROAD HOST AND GEOGRAPHIC RANGE, ALL FISH IN AQUACULTURE ($10B ANNUALLY), AQUARIUM TRADE SPECIES ($278M ANNUALLY), AND CONSERVATION SPECIES ($7.6B), OR A TOTAL OF $18B ANNUALLY ARE SUSCEPTIBLE TO A. OCELLATUM. DUE TO ITS RAPID ONSET, THERE ARE OFTEN NO SIGNS OF INFESTATION BEFORE MORTALITIES BEGIN TO APPEAR WITHIN A SYSTEM, MAKING IT IMPERATIVE TO DIAGNOSE AND TREAT AS EARLY AS POSSIBLE. CURRENT METHODOLOGIES FOR DETECTING A. OCELLATUM ARE INSUFFICIENT TO CIRCUMVENT OUTBREAKS. THIS PROJECT BUILDS ON TWO INNOVATIVE APPROACHES PROVEN SUCCESSFUL IN OUR PHASE I PROJECT: (1) USING BASE PAIR'S PATENTED VENNMULTIPLEX SELEX APPROACH WE WILL DEVELOP APTAMERS THAT ARE SELECTIVE FOR THE DINOSPORE AND TROPHONT PHASES OF THE PARASITE
