The purpose of this multi-year program is to promote access to data and related products that inform species status assessments, management processes, and critical research questions to support the sustainable management of fisheries resources in California, Oregon, Washington, and Alaska....
The University of California San Diego, through its Scripps Institution of Oceanography division, was awarded a $259,996 cooperative agreement from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to evaluate ocean demographic parameters and salmon stock forecasts. Funded through NOAA's $11.4 million Sea Grant Support program, the two-year project will develop hierarchical models integrating cohort data across California salmon stocks. Researchers will reconstruct past cohorts, estimate...
The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) has been awarded a $484,823 Formula Grant under the U.S. Department of the Interior's Sport Fish Restoration (CFDA 15.605) program. The grant, with a project period of July 1, 2024 to June 30, 2025, will fund studies to assess recreational fisheries across the North Central Region of California. These studies will examine fish population structure, dynamics, species composition, and angler utilization and preferences for both coldwater...
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration awarded an $861,000 project grant to the Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife under the Pacific Coast Salmon Recovery Pacific Salmon Treaty Program (CFDA 11.438) to support dockside monitoring of non-tribal ocean commercial salmon troll fisheries and ocean recreational salmon fisheries off the coast of Washington from October 1, 2022 to September 30, 2023. Specifically, the grant will fund the collection of catch and effort data...
The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) has been awarded a $24,738,000 Project Grant from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) under the Pacific Coast Salmon Recovery Pacific Salmon Treaty Program (CFDA 11.438). The project will analyze 400...
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) awarded a $6.2M Cooperative Agreement to the Pacific States Marine Fisheries Commission (PSMFC) under the Pacific Fisheries Data Program (CFDA 11.437). The agreement will support PSMFC's work to develop and implement a cooperative state/federal system for collecting and managing data on Pacific Coast marine recreational fisheries. This will involve data collection on fish catch volumes, species composition, fishing locations, effort,...
This two-year, $486,243 National Science Foundation Project Grant under the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050) will support research examining the impacts of ocean warming and thermal stratification on seabird populations globally. The Farallon Institute will analyze existing long-term data on plankton, small fish, and seabird breeding success across oceans to develop models linking thermal stratification at various ocean depths to productivity. Results aim to identify seabird species best suited...
The California Department of Fish and Wildlife received a $362,265.65 Formula Grant award from the U.S. Department of the Interior Fish and Wildlife Service Region 8 under the Sport Fish Restoration program (CFDA 15.605) to conduct an assessment of state-managed finfish species of recreational importance in Central and Northern California. PACIFIC SARDINE IS ONE OF THE TOP TEN HIGHEST VALUED COMMERCIAL FISHERIES IN CALIFORNIA. BUT DECLINING STOCK ASSESSMENTS PRECIPITATED CLOSURE OF THE DIRECTED SARDINE FISHERY IN 2015. IN 2019, NORTHERN SARDINES WERE DECLARED OVERFISHED, CURTAILING THE ALLOWED INCIDENTAL CATCH RATE. THIS ALSO CURTAILED FISHING FOR SPECIES THAT SCHOOL WITH SARDINES, INFLICTING SERIOUS IMPACTS ON INDUSTRY. THE GOAL OF THIS PROJECT IS TO COLLECT AND ANALYZE HISTORICAL AND CURRENT BIOLOGICAL AND LANDINGS DATA YEARLONG, BI-MONTHLY OBSERVATIONS AND MONTHLY SAMPLES FROM PURSE SEINE FISHING AND LIVE BAIT CATCHES, TO TEST THE HYPOTHESIS THAT NSP AND SSP SARDINES, PARTICULARLY SARDINES INSHORE OF NOAA SURVEYS, CAN BE ACCURATELY SEPARATED BY THEIR ASSOCIATION WITH 16.7C SST USING MORPHOLOGICAL (E.G. LENGTH, WEIGHT, AGE, VERTEBRAL COUNT) AND BIOLOGICAL METRICS. THE OUTCOME WILL ENHANCE UNDERSTANDING OF STOCK STRUCTURE AND MAY LEAD TO INCREASED FISHING OPPORTUNITIES.
