Description

The project has shown there exists pelagic squid species that can be caught using traditional squid jigging fishing lures and gear. The project also demonstrated clear market interest in locally produced fresh squid that can supply the islands with fresh island seafood that is favorable over foreign imported products. A secondary outcome has been the identification of the potential to develop a monchong, sickle pomfret, fishery for export to international markets as a high value fresh seafood product. Monchong is highly regarded a valuable seafood product in japan but is not locally produced. Monchong is commonly available in the pacific islands (hawaii, guam, cnmi), but is not targeted as a directed fishery in the mariana islands. This project furthers fishery development in the region by: 1) expanding pelagic squid fishing by making sample squid
