About this award
Kaala Farm, Inc. was awarded a $187,780 Project Grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services under the Native American/Native Hawaiian Museum Services Program (NANH-Museums) to develop and provide fiber arts workshops. The workshops will discuss the role of fiber arts in Hawaiian history and culture and offer hands-on opportunities for participants to gain skills in this important Native Hawaiian art form. Kaala Farm will identify fiber arts practitioners to lead pilot programs, coordinate recruitment efforts, and evaluate workshop content before launching broader programs. The goal is to create opportunities for deeper understanding of ancestral and contemporary Native Hawaiian history, especially in Waianae. Through engagement with Hawaiian history and fiber arts, students, elders, families and others will gain new perspectives on this art form from a Native Hawaiian viewpoint.
