- The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke awarded the Sloan-Kettering Institute for Cancer Research $484,000 on May 1, 2026, under the Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders program (CFDA 93.853). The award funds research characterizing and inhibiting interactions of the alpha-secretase ADAM17 with the neuronal-myelin signaling complex upon spinal cord injury. The study investigates how myelin-associated inhibitors—including...
- The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke awarded the University of Massachusetts Medical School $551,557 on August 15, 2026, under the Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders program (CFDA 93.853) to investigate nucleic acid sensing pathways in demyelinating disease. The funded research dissects the role of endosomal toll-like receptors (eTLRs) in neuroinflammation and demyelination, specifically examining how aberrant eTLR signaling in...
- The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), a component of the Department of Health and Human Services National Institutes of Health, awarded Baylor College of Medicine $124,106 on April 1, 2026, under the Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders program (CFDA 93.853, Project Grant K99NS146618). The award funds research into the mechanisms of neurological manifestations in myotonic dystrophy type 1 (DM1), a progressive neuromuscular...
- The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke awarded The Johns Hopkins University $232,938 on February 17, 2026, under the Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders program (CFDA 93.853) to generate critical knowledge on neuronal membrane proteasome-derived peptide signaling in the peripheral nervous system. The research extends prior work on NMP-peptides and their role in peripheral neuron crosstalk and regulation. The award funds proteomics,...
- The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), part of the National Institutes of Health, awarded Rutgers The State University of New Jersey, School of Nursing, $474,749 on August 1, 2026, under the Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders program (CFDA 93.853) to investigate the molecular and cellular mechanisms governing functional maturation and adult subtype diversification in spinal motor neurons. The project addresses postnatal...
- The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke awarded the University of Massachusetts Medical School $542,777 on September 1, 2026, under the Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders program (CFDA 93.853) to discover and functionally analyze somatic mutations contributing to sporadic amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. The research combines clinical expertise in ALS genetics with expertise in somatic mutations and single-cell analysis to investigate...
- The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke awarded The Trustees of Columbia University in the City of New York $126,900 on March 7, 2026, under the Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders program (CFDA 93.853). The award funds research to exploit RNA biogenesis, specifically alternative splicing programs, to accelerate maturation of human neurons in vitro and to develop models of age-related tauopathies. The research addresses a fundamental...
- The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke awarded San Diego Biomedical Research Institute $541,750 on May 15, 2026, under the Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders program (CFDA 93.853) to discover noncanonical autophagy modulators for Alzheimer's disease and related dementias. The project establishes two complementary intracellular functional screening platforms to identify novel autophagy-activating molecules that restore proteostasis in...
The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke awarded the Hugo W. Moser Research Institute at Kennedy Krieger, Inc. $234,360 on September 5, 2026, under the Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders program (CFDA 93.853) to identify phenotypic subtypes and disease trajectories in adrenomyeloneuropathy using quantitative sensorimotor measures and spinal cord MRI indices. The research addresses the lack of sensitive outcome measures and biomarkers that have limited clinical trial success in AMN, the most common form of X-linked adrenoleukodystrophy. The project will obtain cross-sectional sensorimotor outcome measures in 80 individuals with AMN using machine learning cluster analysis to determine distinct phenotypic subtypes and correlate them with spinal cord MRI abnormalities in the dorsal columns and lateral corticospinal tracts. The work will also determine whether longitudinal sensorimotor measures and spinal cord MRI indices change over a two-year period to validate quantitative assessments of AMN progression. Performance occurs in Baltimore, Maryland. The period of performance extends from the award date through August 31, 2031. This is a Project Grant, a category of assistance funding under the NINDS extramural research program supporting investigator-initiated research in neuroscience and neurological disorders.
