The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) awarded a $174,960 Project Grant under the Cardiovascular Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.837) to the Regents of the University of Michigan, Office of Research and Sponsored Projects. The grant will support the development and evaluation of a personalized, stroke volume-guided approach to initial fluid resuscitation for patients with hospital-onset sepsis. Key activities include: 1) Assessing the impact of initial fluid volume on outcomes in hospital-onset sepsis through an electronic health record-based study, 2) Developing a personalized, physiology-guided fluid resuscitation intervention, and 3) Conducting a pilot pragmatic clinical trial comparing the personalized approach to usual care. The project aims to advance understanding of fluid resuscitation in hospital-onset sepsis and generate preliminary data to compete for future R-series awards for follow-up trials, while positioning the early-career principal investigator, Dr. Elizabeth Munroe, for independence as a physician-scientist leading novel critical care research.
