About this award

The Chinese Culture Center of San Francisco will implement a youth arts fellowship program called "Generation Chinatown" under a $117,020 Project Grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services' Museums for America federal grant program (CFDA 45.301). The fellowship will deepen 7-10 multiethnic high school students' creative skills and civic leadership abilities through workshops, public art projects, and engagement with Chinatown residents to explore issues of place, community, race, and equity. Artist mentors will partner with the fellows as they investigate how cultural resilience can be strengthened in Chinatown and reshape narratives about the neighborhood. The grant will support culturally relevant youth programming and address pandemic-related economic and xenophobic impacts, in line with Museums for America's goal of strengthening individual museums' ability to serve the public.

Description

The chinese culture center of SAN francisco will implement "generation chinatown," a place-based, out-of-school, youth arts fellowship program intended to deepen participants' creative voices and build civic leadership skills. The museum will partner with local service organizations to convene a cohort of 7-10 multiracial high school fellows and pair them with artist mentors. They will participate in workshops, produce public artworks, investigate topics related to place and local community, engage with community members, and build awareness around issues of race and equity. The project will address the immediate need for more culturally relevant youth programming, as well as the economic and xenophobic impacts of the covid-19 pandemic on the chinatown neighborhood. Fellows will learn in dialogue with one another as they explore how artists can add to the cultural resilience of chinatown and help reshape narratives about the community.
