The Department of Health and Human Services Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration awarded $995,000 to the Confederated Tribes and Bands of the Yakama Nation on September 30, 2026, under the Center for Substance Abuse Treatment Projects of Regional and National Significance program (CFDA 93.490) to expand culturally responsive screening, brief intervention, referral to treatment, and recovery support services for youth and adults on or near the Yakama Nation Reservation in south-central Washington. The Yakama Nation will integrate evidence-based substance use screening and intervention services into behavioral health, primary care, school-based, and community settings, targeting 300 unduplicated individuals annually (175 youth ages 12–21 and 125 adults) over five years for a total of 1,500 individuals. The population of focus includes youth and adults at risk for or experiencing substance use disorders, co-occurring mental health conditions, trauma-related concerns, opioid and fentanyl use, alcohol misuse, and nicotine or vaping-related concerns. Services will implement the SBIRT model through TIINAWIT AWTNI SHLXWLTPAMA (the Yakama Nation Community Clinic), the Yakama Nation Tribal Schools, and public schools in White Swan, Toppenish, and Wapato, beginning within four months of award and sustained through integration into Yakama Nation behavioral health systems. Evidence-based interventions include motivational interviewing and cognitive behavioral therapy for brief intervention, Living in Balance for brief treatment, peer recovery support, referral to medication-assisted treatment, detoxification and residential treatment, family engagement, and wraparound care coordination. The period of performance runs through September 29, 2031. Place of performance is Toppenish, Washington.
