The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration awarded $800,000 to KC Care Health Center on September 30, 2026, under the Center for Mental Health Services Projects of Regional and National Significance program (CFDA 93.532) to implement the Kansas City Zero Suicide Initiative. KC Care Health Center will deploy standardized suicide risk screening using the PHQ-9 and Columbia Suicide Severity Rating Scale, workforce training, Collaborative Assessment and Management of Suicidality (CAMS), enhanced care coordination, and partnerships with crisis services and the Veterans Health Administration across its integrated primary care, behavioral health, dental, and substance use treatment settings. The initiative targets adults at risk for suicide across the Kansas City metropolitan area and is guided by the Zero Suicide Framework with support from University Health. Expected outcomes include earlier identification of suicide risk, improved engagement in evidence-based treatment, stronger continuity of care, universal staff training, and improved outcomes for adults at risk for suicide. Performance will occur in Kansas City, Missouri over the period from September 30, 2026 through September 29, 2031. KC Care Health Center is a non-profit organization registered in SAM since February 2006 that provides comprehensive healthcare services with emphasis on HIV/AIDS treatment, prevention, and support services to underserved populations in the Kansas City metropolitan area.
