The Department of Health and Human Services Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA Center for Mental Health Services) awarded Lifespring Inc. $399,384 on September 30, 2026, under the Center for Mental Health Services Projects of Regional and National Significance program (CFDA 93.532) to implement the Zero Suicide Initiative across its 11-county service area in Southern Indiana.
Lifespring will establish a systemwide Zero Suicide framework targeting adults at risk of suicide, particularly those with serious mental illness and co-occurring substance use disorders experiencing recent crisis or hospital transitions. The project delivers workforce training, universal suicide risk screening using the Columbia–Suicide Severity Rating Scale and PHQ-9, standardized safety planning, evidence-based treatments including Collaborative Assessment and Management of Suicidality (CAMS), cognitive behavioral therapy for suicide prevention (CBT-SP), and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), structured post-crisis follow-up, and continuous quality improvement. Expected outcomes include universal screening implementation, expanded delivery of suicide-specific care, improved continuity during care transitions, reduced suicide-related hospitalizations, and a sustainable organizational culture focused on suicide prevention.
The award period runs from September 30, 2026, through September 29, 2031, with place of performance in Watson, Indiana. Lifespring Inc., a non-profit mental health and primary care provider based in Jeffersonville, Indiana, serves rural populations across Southern Indiana with a focus on underserved communities.
