The Lac Courte Oreilles Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians of Wisconsin received a $498,914 Project Grant from the Department of Health and Human Services (CFDA 93.933 Demonstration Projects for Indian Health) to implement the Mino-Bimaadiziwin Prevention Program. This 5-year grant, awarded on February 1, 2025, aims to increase community awareness and education on Anishinaabe-centered prevention, treatment, and recovery practices for opioid use disorder (OUD). The program will expand access to medication-assisted treatment (MAT) services by incorporating Anishinaabe culture throughout OUD treatment, build tribal-wide systems of Anishinaabe support to improve recovery service access, and increase harm reduction techniques and activities within the Lac Courte Oreilles community. The grant will fund the addition of a substance use disorder (SUD) counselor at the LCO Community Health Center and Bizhiki Wellness Center to provide a family-centered approach to meet the needs of individuals suffering from OUD, those in recovery, and their families.
