The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Indian Health Service awarded a $500,000 Project Grant under the Demonstration Projects for Indian Health program (CFDA 93.933) to Nevada Urban Indians Inc., a non-profit organization serving urban Native American populations in Northern Nevada. The 5-year grant will fund the "Opioid Response Program at Nevada Urban Indians, Inc." The program aims to: 1) Build an effective opioid response team, 2) Apply culturally-appropriate, evidence-based practices to assess, prevent, and treat opioid use disorders, 3) Increase access to harm reduction services like naloxone, 4) Expand access to medication-assisted treatment and care coordination, and 5) Increase community awareness and education on opioid abuse, prevention, and harm reduction. This grant award is intended to address the significant increase in opioid-related overdoses and fatalities experienced in Northern Nevada's urban Native American communities.
