The Department of Health and Human Services' Indian Health Service awarded a $500,000 Project Grant under the Demonstration Projects for Indian Health (CFDA 93.933) program to the Albuquerque Area Indian Health Board Inc. (AAIHB), a tribal organization serving Native communities in New Mexico, Colorado, and Texas. The AAIHB Community Opioid Intervention Prevention Project (COIPP) will utilize this 5-year grant to advance professional and community capacity for culturally appropriate, trauma-informed public health education, prevention, harm reduction, and treatment for opioid use disorder among American Indian/Alaska Native populations in the IHS Albuquerque Area. Key activities include providing sub-awards to tribes, training on best practices, conveying an annual opioid summit, implementing the Community Reinforcement and Family Training (CRAFT) program, and distributing essential harm reduction supplies like naloxone. This comprehensive project aims to cultivate safe, non-violent environments to support healing and recovery for individuals and families impacted by opioid use and substance abuse challenges.
