The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) awarded a $375,266 Project Grant under the Cooperative Landslide Hazard Mapping and Assessment Program (CFDA 15.821) to the Washington State Department of Natural Resources (DNR) for the period of July 1, 2025 to June 30, 2027. The grant will support mapping debris flow hazards and establishing baseline debris flow activity rates in pre- and post-wildfire environments across two counties in Washington state. Key activities include mapping alluvial fans and...
The University of Kentucky Research Foundation was awarded a $324,522 Project Grant from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Cooperative Landslide Hazard Mapping and Assessment Program (CFDA 15.821). The purpose of this 2-year project, running from November 1, 2025 to October 31, 2027, is to produce a comprehensive landslide inventory and susceptibility maps for the Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky region. This will be achieved through change detection analysis of repeat LiDAR surveys to...
This $140,335 Project Grant award from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Cooperative Landslide Hazard Mapping and Assessment Program (CFDA 15.821) supports two key activities in Oregon: Landslide inventory mapping using LiDAR data in the northern portion of Clackamas County. This region has experienced historic landslides and debris flows, and continues to undergo development along a major highway corridor. The detailed mapping will benefit local communities by identifying areas at risk....
This $365,000 Cooperative Agreement awarded by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) under the USGS Research and Data Collection program (CFDA 15.808) will support research, data collection, and monitoring for the Alaska Landslide Program. Key activities include using LiDAR data to preliminarily identify and map suspected landslides, conducting...

PROJECT TITLE: NORTH DAKOTA PHASE III LANDSLIDE INVENTORY: MAPPING ACTIVE LANDSLIDES IN THE BISMARCK 1:100,000 QUADRANGLEPROJECT PERIOD: 07 01 2025 07 01 2026THE FIRST NORTH DAKOTA GEOLOGICAL SURVEY LANDSLIDE INVENTORY MAP (ABOUT 300 1:24,000 SCALEQUADRANGLE MAPS) WAS PUBLISHED IN 2003 DURING PHASE I OF THE NORTH DAKOTA GEOLOGICAL SURVEYSLANDSLIDE MAPPING PROGRAM. LANDSLIDES WERE DELINEATED BY HAND USING STEREO PROJECTION OF BLACKAND WHITE 1:20,000 SCALE AERIAL PHOTOGRAPHS TAKEN DURING THE 1950S AND 1960S. PHASE II STARTED IN2017 WITH THE GOAL TO MAP LANDSLIDES FOR THE ENTIRE STATE USING LIDAR, AND NOW PHASE III IS MAPPINGACTIVE LANDSLIDES UTILIZING REPEAT LIDAR COVERAGES. GEOLOGISTS AT THE NORTH DAKOTA GEOLOGICALSURVEY CALCULATE THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE TWO LIDAR COLLECTS TO LOCATE MOVEMENT AND, ONCEDETERMINED TO BE A LANDSLIDE, DELINEATE THE FEATURE. THIS AWARD WOULD FUND PHASE III IN THE BISMARCK1:100,000 QUADRANGLE IN CENTRAL NORTH DAKOTA. THE PROJECT AREA CONTAINS BOTH STATE AND FEDERALLAND IN LANDSLIDE PRONE AREAS, ALONG WITH URBAN INFRASTRUCTURE, SOME OF WHICH HAVE BEEN IMPACTEDRECENTLY BY LANDSLIDES. MAPPING ACTIVE LANDSLIDES PROVIDES A DATASET THAT THE PUBLIC, GOVERNMENT,AND INDUSTRY LEADERS CAN USE TO MAKE INFORMED DECISIONS CONCERNING PRIVATE AND INDUSTRYINFRASTRUCTURE INSTALLATION. ALONGSIDE COMMERCIAL APPLICATIONS, FURTHER DEVELOPMENT OF OURSTATEWIDE ACTIVE LANDSLIDE DATASET CREATES AN INVALUABLE ASSET FOR STUDYING THE NATURE OF LANDSLIDEOCCURRENCE. THE BISMARCK 1:100,000 AREA NOW HAS MULTIPLE LIDAR DATASETS, ONE OF WHICH IS 3DEP.
