- This federal Project Grant awarded by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) under the USGS Cooperative Landslide Hazard Mapping and Assessment Program (CFDA 15.821) provides $200,138 to The University of Kentucky Research Foundation to conduct research mapping and assessing landslide hazards in Eastern Kentucky. The key products to be delivered include: Two comprehensive landslide inventories - a historical inventory and an event-based inventory documenting over 1,000 landslides triggered by a major...
- Federal Grant Award Summary The University of Kentucky Research Foundation received a $324,522 project grant from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) under the Cooperative Landslide Hazard Mapping and Assessment Program (CFDA 15.821) to develop comprehensive landslide inventory and susceptibility mapping for the Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky region. The two-year project, spanning November 1, 2025, through October 31, 2027, addresses a significant gap in hazard assessment for an urban area...
- Federal Grant Award Summary The Trustees of Indiana University received a $106,512 Project Grant from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) under the Cooperative Landslide Hazard Mapping and Assessment Program (CFDA 15.821) for the period of September 1, 2025, through August 31, 2026. The project will develop a comprehensive landslide inventory for south-central Indiana using statewide Quality Level 2 (QL2) Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) data. The Indiana Geological and Water Survey (IGWS) will...
- This Project Grant award of $180,000 was issued by the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Geosciences Program (CFDA 47.050) to a researcher at Mount Pleasant, MI. The grant aims to develop methods for automatically detecting landslides and other erosion on former mountaintop removal coal mining sites in Central Appalachia. The project will leverage LiDAR data to observe erosion and deposition processes at a regional scale, train deep learning models for automated geomorphic mapping, and conduct...
- This Project Grant from the National Science Foundation's Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050) provides $218,998 to North Carolina State University from March 2023 through February 2026. The funding supports research to develop and test a new technique for forecasting geohazards such as landslides, submarine slides, ground fissures, and liquefaction. Specifically, the researchers aim to determine if measurements of the density of excited vibrational modes (DOM) in natural sediments can provide a...
- This Project Grant award, funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) Engineering program (CFDA 47.041), supports research at Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University (Virginia Tech) to advance the understanding of rainfall-triggered landslides and their consequences, considering vegetation effects and climate change. The $570,960 award, effective March 1, 2024 through February 28, 2029, aims to: (1) develop numerical analysis methods to incorporate the hydromechanical effects...
- Federal Grant Award Summary The Washington State Department of Natural Resources received a $375,266 Project Grant award dated July 1, 2025, under the USGS Cooperative Landslide Hazard Mapping and Assessment Program (CFDA 15.821) to establish pre- and post-wildfire debris flow rates on alluvial fans in the Eastern Cascade Range. The two-year project (through June 30, 2027) will deliver geospatial intelligence and hazard assessments by mapping alluvial fans and debris flow initiation points,...
- This $140,335 Project Grant award from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Cooperative Landslide Hazard Mapping and Assessment Program (CFDA 15.821) supports two key activities in Oregon: Landslide inventory mapping using LiDAR data in the northern portion of Clackamas County. This region has experienced historic landslides and debris flows, and continues to undergo development along a major highway corridor. The detailed mapping will benefit local communities by identifying areas at risk....
- West Virginia FY25 STATEMAP Project Summary The U.S. Geological Survey's National Cooperative Geologic Mapping Program (STATEMAP, CFDA 15.810) awarded the West Virginia Geological and Economic Survey a $252,503 cooperative agreement on December 15, 2025, for a two-year project period extending through December 14, 2027. The award funds three integrated geologic mapping and data development initiatives designed to advance stratigraphic knowledge and public access to geological information...
- Project Grant Summary: Alaska BLM Data Rescue Project The Alaska Department of Natural Resources, Division of Financial Support & Services, received a $240,000 Project Grant from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) under the National Geological and Geophysical Data Preservation Program (CFDA 15.814) for the period July 1, 2025 through June 30, 2028. The Alaska Division of Geological Geophysical Surveys (DGGS) will digitize and preserve a collection of over 30 pallets of undigitized Bureau of...
PROJECT ABSTRACT SUMMARYPROJECT TITLE: PROPOSAL FOR LANDSLIDE INVENTORY MAPPING UTILIZING CHANGE DETECTION TECHNIQUES IN WESTERN NORTHDAKOTAPROJECT PERIOD: 07 15 2024 THROUGH 07 15 2025THE FIRST NORTH DAKOTA GEOLOGICAL SURVEY LANDSLIDE INVENTORY MAP (ABOUT 300 1:24,000SCALE QUADRANGLE MAPS) WAS PUBLISHED IN 2003 DURING PHASE I OF THE NORTH DAKOTAGEOLOGICAL SURVEYS LANDSLIDE MAPPING PROGRAM. THE LANDSLIDES WERE DELINEATED BY HANDUSING STEREO PROJECTION OF BLACK AND WHITE 1:20,000 SCALE AERIAL PHOTOGRAPHS TAKEN DURINGTHE 1950S AND 1960S. PHASE II STARTED AROUND 2017 WITH THE GOAL OF MAPPING LANDSLIDES FORTHE ENTIRE STATE USING LIDAR, AND NOW PHASE III IS MAPPING ACTIVE LANDSLIDES UTILIZING REPEATLIDAR COVERAGES. GEOLOGISTS AT THE NORTH DAKOTA GEOLOGICAL SURVEY CALCULATE THEDIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE TWO LIDAR COLLECTS TO LOCATE MOVEMENT AND, ONCE DETERMINED TOBE A LANDSLIDE, DELINEATE THE FEATURE. THIS AWARD WOULD FUND PHASE III IN THE BELFIELD1:100,000 QUADRANGLE IN WESTERN NORTH DAKOTA. THIS AREA CONTAINS EXTENSIVE CRITICAL ENERGYINFRASTRUCTURE (OIL WELL PADS AND PIPELINES) AND ENCOMPASSES A REGION THAT IS VERY LANDSLIDEDENSE. MAPPING ACTIVE LANDSLIDES PROVIDES A DATASET THAT THE PUBLIC, GOVERNMENT, ANDINDUSTRY LEADERS CAN USE TO MAKE INFORMED DECISIONS CONCERNING PRIVATE AND INDUSTRYINFRASTRUCTURE INSTALLATION. ALONGSIDE COMMERCIAL APPLICATIONS, FURTHER DEVELOPMENT OF OURSTATEWIDE ACTIVE LANDSLIDE DATASET CREATES AN INVALUABLE ASSET FOR STUDYING THE NATURE OFLANDSLIDE OCCURRENCE. THE BELFIELD 1:100,000 AREA NOW HAS MULTIPLE LIDAR DATASETS, ONE OFWHICH IS 3DEP.
