Description
Plato's inferences about the soul [i am seeking an NEH fellowship to write a monograph that (1) identifies plato basic commitments about the soul, (2) examines how he draws inferences from these commitments, and (3) clarifies how these commitments and inferences, when combined in different works, provide different models of the soul. This will provide a new framework that will generate fresh insights into plato?s most important and influential ideas about the soul. IT will carefully trace how plato?s views interact with one another, and how they are transformed in plato?s later dialogues, once he views the soul as a self-mover. The book will be of interest to anyone wanting to know why plato views the soul he does, including those working in later history of philosophy, science, and religion (in the greek, latin, and arabic traditions). At the same time, IT will be accessible and of interest to contemporary philosophers of mind who want to understand the history of their discipline.]
