Description
While contemporary theorists of action credit aristotle as their field?s founder, they typically overlook the rich philosophical context for his contribution. I propose a novel way of systematizing fundamental insights from the presocratics, plato, aristotle, and hellenistic philosophers, by showing how they offer attractive and still relevant answers to two questions very much alive in recent philosophy: namely, 1) through what sort of causality do agents make themselves into the authors of their deeds? And 2) how do actions, unlike other natural processes, come to be subject to distinctively rational norms? My approach will be interdisciplinary and straddle the physical, metaphysical, psychological, and ethical commitments underlying ancient conceptions of action. The project seeks to make these conceptions newly available for serious consideration.]
