Project Grant F31DK148044
- The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases awarded Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai $871,028 on March 1, 2026, under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847) to investigate iron trafficking mechanisms in myelodysplastic syndrome erythropoiesis. The recipient will conduct research examining how excess iron impairs red blood cell production in MDS patients and whether modulating iron trafficking can restore effective...
- The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases awarded Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai $874,673 on August 15, 2026, under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847) to investigate how suppression of 5-aminolevulinic acid synthase 1 (ALAS1) enhances therapeutic RNA interference activity. The project tests a novel genetic strategy to improve the efficacy of small interfering RNAs (siRNAs) in extrahepatic tissues where...
- The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases awarded Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai $816,825 on April 15, 2026, under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847) to investigate how injured podocytes communicate with parietal epithelial cells to drive proliferative glomerulopathy, specifically whether podocyte-derived exosomes mediate this cell-to-cell signaling in rapidly progressive glomerulonephritis. The research uses...
- The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases awarded the University of Pennsylvania $755,666 on March 15, 2026, under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847) to define mitochondrial surveillance mechanisms in hematopoietic cells and develop a therapeutic approach to treat myelodysplastic syndrome driven by splicing factor mutations. The award funds research into the role of PINK1 splicing in mitophagy, a mitochondrial...
- The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases awarded Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai $742,478 on July 15, 2026, under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847) to elucidate how RNA-lipid nanoparticle transfection and expression in professional antigen-presenting cells and non-professional antigen-presenting cells—specifically hepatocytes and skeletal myocytes—modulate T cell responses to RNA-encoded protein. The...
- The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases awarded $910,670 to Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai on August 15, 2026, under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847) to characterize a cluster of single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the LILRB3 gene associated with post-transplant renal failure in kidney transplant recipients. The research characterizes four consecutive SNPs in LILRB3 that encode missense mutations...
- The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases awarded Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai $889,856 on August 17, 2026, under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847) to investigate mechanisms by which metabolic-associated fatty liver disease (MASH) drives chronic kidney disease pathogenesis. The recipient will conduct three specific research aims over the performance period through April 30, 2031. Aim 1 confirms the...
- The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases awarded Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai $571,200 on August 1, 2026, under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847) to conduct basic research on mechanisms protecting pancreatic beta cells from dysfunction and death in diabetes. The award funds research into a novel small molecule compound (Compound 43) that acts as a molecular glue to stabilize the interaction between the...
- The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases awarded Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai $240,228 on April 3, 2026, under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847) to conduct basic research on immune-adipocyte crosstalk in regulating adipose thermogenesis. The recipient will investigate how immune cells and adipocytes interact within adipose tissue to control thermogenic function, with particular focus on the interleukin-10...
- The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases awarded The Trustees of Columbia University in the City of New York $249,999 on June 15, 2026, under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847) to investigate chromatin dynamics in erythroid differentiation and the molecular basis of erythropoietin resistance in STAG2-mutant myelodysplastic syndrome. The research examines how loss of the STAG2 protein disrupts erythroid-specific...
The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases awarded Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai $100,228 on February 13, 2027, under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847) to conduct research on PINK1 regulation of terminal erythroid maturation and red blood cell enucleation. The research tests the physiological role of PINK1 (PTEN-induced kinase 1) in terminal erythroid maturation and enucleation—the process by which developing red blood cells remove their nucleus. The investigator will examine how PINK1 regulates this process via the PINK1/parkin mitophagy pathway and independent mechanisms, building on prior findings that PINK1-knockout mice produce more red blood cells and exhibit higher enucleation rates in orthochromatic erythroblasts with accumulated mitochondria. Understanding these mechanisms addresses the understudied gap in erythropoiesis that hinders comprehension of diseases arising from ineffective erythropoiesis and advancement of in vitro red blood cell production. Performance occurs in New York, New York. The period of performance runs from February 13, 2027, through August 31, 2029. The assistance type is a Project Grant.
