Description

The office of kentucky nature preserves (oknp) proposes to implement a coordinated suite of research, monitoring, and conservation actions under section 6 of the endangered species act to advance recovery efforts for multiple federally listed and at-risk plant species endemic to kentucky. Segment 40 will focus on six primary activity studies addressing population status, threats, management effectiveness, seed based recovery strategies, and habitat protection for priority taxa, including braun s rockcress (borodinia perstellata), globe bladderpod (physaria globosa), price s potato bean (apios priceana), short s goldenrod (solidago shortii), white haired goldenrod (solidago albopilosa), virginia spiraea (spiraea virginiana), cumberland rosemary (conradina verticillata), tennessee pondweed (potamogeton tennesseensis), and large flowered barbara s buttons (marshallia grandiflora).this program addresses urgent conservation needs resulting from population declines, invasive species pressure, habitat degradation, recreational impacts, and limited dispersal capacity. Activities will include quantitative monitoring of extant populations, installation of transects andpermanent plots, threat assessments, habitat condition evaluations, and implementation of targeted management strategies such as invasive plant control, prescribed fire coordination, and woody vegetation removal. Seed collection, propagation, and translocation efforts will be expanded to support population augmentation and establishment of new populations in high quality habitat. The program also emphasizes landscape scale conservation by strengthening partnerships with federal agencies, private landowners, conservation organizations, and volunteer groups. Oknp will work collaboratively to increase habitat protection through conservation easements, registered natural areas designation, and cooperative management planning. Surveys for new populations will expand knowledge of current species distribution and guide future recovery prioritization.expected outcomes include improved understanding of population trends, enhanced adaptive management frameworks, increased population stability, and strategic protection of critical habitats. These efforts will contribute to long term recovery objectives, reduce extinction risk, and inform future listing decisions for eligible but unlisted taxa. Through integrated monitoring, management, and restoration, segment 40 will strengthen kentucky s capacity to conserve its most imperiled plant species and the unique natural communities they inhabit.
