Description
IT is NJ fish and wildlife?s endangered nongame species programs goal to conserve and restore rare wildlife in the state of NJ which includes enhancing breeding populations within the state and providing essential habitats for the large migration of wildlife through our state. Baseline surveys and continued monitoring are necessary components of an adaptive management approach to conservation. The purpose of this grant is to monitor and manage new jerseys federally listed red knot populations and monitor their response to management actions undertaken to restore their populations. Specific activities include compiling all current data on state federal and municipal lands and analyzing short and long term trends in population, productivity and distribution and assess threats by site and region. Site specific data will be used to adaptively manage those sites and address threats such as disturbance predation and local uses and minimizing disturbances on important beaches so red knots can maximize feeding and resting time and thereby optimize weight gain for migration to the arctic. Funds would also support surveys to assess red knot food resources on delaware BAY beaches, and the cost of aerial surveys that cover both new jersey and delaware shorelines of delaware BAY in cooperation with DE division of fish & wildlife.
