About this award
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) awarded $100,000 to the Illinois Department of Natural Resources on September 1, 2025, under the Clean Vessel Act (CVA) program (CFDA 15.616) to support marine sanitation infrastructure at Navy Pier in Chicago, Illinois. The project, with an expected completion date of December 31, 2027, provides funding for installation of a pump-out station, water service hookups, and sewer service connections to serve the newly completed Navy Pier Marina transient facility. The pump-out equipment consists of an M40 dockside (3-tier) pump manufactured by KECO Pump and Equipment, strategically positioned on Pier 1 at the marina's east entry point. The project includes installation of a force main sanitary line within the fixed dock structure that connects to Navy Pier's existing gravity sanitary system.
The sub-grantee, Navy Pier, Inc., a Chicago-based 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, will utilize this infrastructure to provide adequate and accessible pumpout and waste reception facilities for recreational boaters visiting the destination marina. This investment aligns with the CVA program's objective of reducing water pollution and protecting aquatic ecosystems by enabling proper disposal of marine sanitation waste. The project supports educational and outreach initiatives to inform boaters and the general public about the availability and proper use of pumpout facilities in Illinois' coastal waters.
Description
Navy pier marina: this project would provide funding for a pump out station, as well as water and sewer service and hookup, to fulfill the need for this 100% new transient marina for the many vessels anticipated to be visiting this highly desirable destination. The pump out station will utilize a M40 dockside (3 tier) pump manufactured by keco pump and equipment and will be conveniently located on pier 1 at the far east end of the marina adjacent to the marina entry. Construction of the marina is complete, and pier 1 is ready for installation of the pump out equipment. The force main sanitary line will be installed within the fixed dock structure and then connected to the gravity sanitary system of navy pier.
