Description
The stream has been a priority for local conservation partners and the USFWS fisheries for over ten years. Poor riparian management has caused invasive boxelder and buckhorn to flourish in the riparian zone. This has caused streambank erosion and sediment inputs to the stream, resulting in poor instream habitat for brook trout and associated fish and invertebrate communities. Project objectives at traverse valley are to stabilize 0.28 miles of actively eroding streambank, restore 1.38 acres of riparian habitat with native vegetation, and enhance 0.28 miles of instream habitat for fish and invertebrates. Proposed project area activities include site clearing, streambank shaping, placement of rock riprap on eroding outside stream bends, installation of in-stream fish habitat structures, and seeding and mulching of all disturbed areas. Construction activities are expected to begin in the summer of 2024. A perpetual conservation easement has been acquired to allow public access to the trout stream for fishing. Upon completion of this project, there will be eight miles of stream improvements completed involving 27 different landowners in the middle trempealeau watershed.
