Description
This project focuses on securing advanced veterinary equipment essential for elevating the care provided to sick or injured or orphaned west indian manatees in north florida. The project aims to address the increasing health and injury challenges faced by manatees with timely and effective treatment aligning with the needs of the south atlantic gulf stranding region. This project benefits from the extensive expertise in marine mammal conservation and veterinary care of the JZG curator of manatee conservation craig miller (PI) and coinvestigator DR. Meredith persky. The efficient management and skilled team promise effective execution and utilization of the grant. The integration of advanced technologies including the class IV laser for wound healing and pain management and the portable ultrasound devices for accurate diagnostics will significantly enhance treatment capabilities at the JZG manatee critical care center (MCCC). The addition of a compact endoscope unit for medical procedures is essential to adhere to industry standards for immobilizing manatees and ensuring swift interventions during emergencies and maintaining the highest level of care. The project incudes training for staff and volunteers that will enhance both their skills and the quality of care provided to manatees. Environmental impacts of equipment disposal will be mitigated through certified waste services.JZG has been a key player in marine mammal response since 2006 and culminated in the establishment of the MCCC in 2017. The facility has become essential in providing timely car to manatees in north florida and neighboring regions. The federal funding will allow the MCCC to enhance its rehabilitation efforts for this endangered species. This project ultimately represents a significant step forward in manatee rehabilitation by aiming to substantially improve the care and treatment of manatees and contributing positively to their survival and wellbeing.
