This $166,620 federal Project Grant award from the U.S. Department of the Interior Fish and Wildlife Service, under the Migratory Bird Joint Ventures (CFDA 15.637) program, will support a multi-year effort by Birds Canada to:
-
Develop, document, and implement new and improved methods to more accurately monitor the use of restored and enhanced wetlands by birds, frogs, and humans. This will include piloting a new Wetland Restoration Monitoring Protocol (WRMP) at 50 point count locations across 8 wetlands over 2 field seasons.
-
Use the results from the improved monitoring methods to better communicate the benefits of these wetland restorations to funders, stakeholders, and the public. This will involve publishing a peer-reviewed paper on the WRMP, as well as producing blog posts, magazine articles, and social media videos.
The project seeks to enhance the ability to track the impacts of wetland restoration and enhancement efforts on wildlife and human usage, with a focus on American black ducks and other Eastern North American waterfowl. The grant award period runs from April 1, 2024 to September 30, 2026.
