Description

This trout fishing area contains a half mile of casey springs, a state-designated coldwater stream containing a restored native brook trout population. Casey springs has become a popular angling destination in the scenic upper iowa valley between decorah, iowa, and the village of bluffton. Primary goal of this project is to enhance brook trout habitat at sindelar access by excavating a bankfull bench that will reconnect casey springs to its floodplain while stabilizing the streambanks. To accomplish this, we will hire a contractor with the requisite skills and experience to perform earth work in a sensitive area. Managing erosion (with rock, fiber matting, and cover crops) and establishing native prairie vegetation in the project areas within two years will be important for maintaining the work that has been done. Iowa DNR standardized fish surveys and formal habitat assessments will be used to quantitatively measure the success of this project. A secondary objective of this project will be to increase angler use and angler access to this area. Every five years, the iowa DNR conducts a survey of trout anglers that will allow US to monitor changing angler use patterns on casey springs through time. We will also solicit feedback from local anglers and the trout unlimited chapter before and after the project to further evaluate angler usage.
