About this award

Fundacion Proaves De Colombia, a non-profit organization in Colombia, received an $800,185 Project Grant award from the U.S. Department of the Interior's Fish and Wildlife Service under the Neotropical Migratory Bird Conservation program (CFDA 15.635). The grant funding supports the organization's efforts to directly protect and manage 88,634 acres of critical migratory bird habitat at 25 strategic sites for cerulean warblers and golden-winged warblers in Colombia. Activities include expanding Colombia's protected area network by acquiring and restoring an additional 72 acres, monitoring focal species populations, and conducting local community education to raise awareness about migratory birds. This work aims to conserve threatened neotropical migrant landbird species that depend on the rapidly diminishing subtropical and montane forests of Colombia.

Description

Two of the most threatened neotropical migrant landbird species the cerulean warbler (cerw) and golden-winged warbler (gwwa) depend on subtropical and montane forests across colombia that are being destroyed at an unprecedented rate. Recently colombia has seen increasing deforestation rates following its peace process while the shut-downs of the covid-19 crisis has permitted illegal invaders into protected areas to exploit natural resources as government entities struggle to respond. In this project, proaves plans to directly protect and manage 88,634 acres (88 increase from the 2018-2021 proposal) of critical migratory bird habitat at 25 strategic sites for cerw and gwwa and expand colombias protected area network for migratory birds at the most important subtropical forest site in the central cordillera for neotropical migrants by acquiring and restoring an additional 72 acres monitoring focal species populations at those sites, and raising awareness about migrants through local community education.
