Description
N.C. Coastal land trust proposes to acquire in fee title a 17.73-acre property along the chowan river near the town of colerain in bertie county. 20,000 dollars requested for conveyance work (survey, title etc. None of this funding will go toward purchase price) the distinctive feature of the property is a 8590-foot bluff along the river. The property lies within a landscape of other conservation lands along the chowan river from the virginia north carolina state line to the albemarle sound. From the north, N.C. Wildlife resources commission owns and manages over 30,000 acres of land, the chowan swamp game land, along the river. Near the albemarle sound, N.C. Coastal land trust purchased over 1,300-acres of land along the chowan river at the confluence of salmon creek and the albemarle sound. The property was transferred to the state to be managed by N.C. Division of parks and recreation as the new salmon creek state natural area. In addition, the point comfort tract lies just 2 miles south of over 1,180 acres of land along the chowan river that was recently purchased, conserved, and transferred by N.C. Coastal land trust to the state to become part of the chowan swamp game lands. The chowan point comfort tract has been called the crown jewel of the albemarle and has geologic, ecological, scenic and educational values. If successful in purchasing the property, the coastal land trust will manage IT as a nature preserve and will host group educational tours of the property.
