Description
The U.S. Fish and wildlife service service solicited proposals for the completion of a feasibility study and alternatives analysis to evaluate potential alternative solutions to provide adult salmonid fish passage at weir 1 in the butte creek sutter bypass west borrow canal WBC . The central valley project improvement act cvpia science integration team and core team recommended improving adult and juvenile passage on butte creek and identified fish passage at weir 1 as a high priority for evaluation and restoration. Weir 1 is a combined weir and fish ladder structure located in the WBC that is in disrepair and is not functioning for the purposes of diverting or delivering water. Weir 1 is located immediately upstream of the intersection of the tisdale weir bypass with the west levee of the sutter bypass. Butte creek is one of the most productive salmonid streams in the sacramento river valley utilized by federal- and state-listed spring-run chinook salmon srcs . Srcs migrate up the sutter bypass to butte creek, navigating past several water control structures to access spawning areas in the upper butte creek system. In turn, juvenile salmon reverse this route during outmigration to the pacific ocean. The migration of anadromous fish, which includes fall- and spring-run chinook salmon and central valley steelhead, is impeded by weir 1. The cvpia anadromous fish restoration program funded environmental science associated ESA to complete the feasibility study and alternatives analysis. ESA will conduct data collection complete conceptual design development for four alternatives including cost estimation convene, facilitate, and work with a technical advisory committee assess a set of alternatives including evaluation with a hydrodynamic model and support the evaluation of the alternatives to allow the service and project management team to identify a preferred alternative solution for fish passage at weir 1.the project timeline is anticipated to run 12 months from october 2022 through september 2023 fiscal year 2023 .
