Description

By the time taylor S checkerspot was listed as state endangered in washington state in 2006, IT was extirpatedfrom all but one of at least 30 puget lowland sites stinson 2005 , with eight sites lost in 1998 2006 STINSON2005, wdfw, unpub data natural recolonization was precluded by habitat loss and isolation of the onlyremaining puget lowland population on joint base lewis mcchord, which led to its federal listing as endangered IN2013 captive rearing followed by reintroduction to restored sites has been effective in reversing these trends, with two new populations established and expanding into surrounding habitat and two additional sites undergoingreintroduction as a result of these actions this reintroduction program has significantly reduced theextirpation risk in this region by expanding the number of populations and growing their size to a point wherenatural colonization of nearby sites is occurring we are proposing to continue this important work in 2023 andare here requesting partial funding to support captive rearing at mission creek corrections center for womenunder the guidance of the evergreen state college sustainability in prisons program in addition, funding wouldsupport subsequent release of caterpillars larvae to restored field sites, effectiveness monitoring, dataprocessing and analysis, and associated management activities the need for and benefits of reintroduction arecritical to the species recovery in many parts of its range these actions are occurring in connection withconservation actions that include land acquisition, habitat restoration and maintenance, population monitoring, species research and landowner agreements however, the species remains vulnerable due to extreme and variableweather events and shifting climate, which in turn affect the availability of important food plants
