About this award

The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) awarded a $199,797 Project Grant under the Promotion of the Humanities Professional Development program (CFDA 45.163) to the Chicago History Museum, doing business as the Chicago Historical Society, for the period of October 1, 2024 to December 31, 2025.

The grant will support the museum's "Rethinking the Gilded Age and Progressivisms: Race, Capitalism, and Democracy, 1877-1920" program, a three-week summer institute for 30 resident teachers across grades 6-12. The institute aims to deepen participants' understanding of this historical period through readings, lectures, primary sources, and engagement with Chicago's historical and cultural resources. The program creates a space for teachers to contemplate and debate how individuals and groups defined, reformed, and contributed to visions of American democracy during a period of diverse political and cultural discourse. Participants will leave the institute with current scholarship on the Gilded Age and Progressive Era, as well as teaching materials developed through their own inquiries.
