The Department of Energy Office of Indian Energy Policy and Programs awarded Alaska Village Electric Cooperative Inc. $2,961,246 on July 1, 2027, under the Renewable Energy Research and Development program (CFDA 81.087) to install refurbished wind turbines and battery energy storage in Mekoryuk, Alaska.
AVEC, acting on behalf of the AVEC/Nunavak Island Mekoryuk Alaska (NIMA) Corporation Renewable Energy Joint Venture, will repower two existing wind turbines with 200 kilowatts of capacity using refurbished Model B turbine generators. The project also includes installation of a battery energy storage system with 320 kilowatts power capacity and 540 kilowatt-hour storage capacity at the Mekoryuk power plant. The integrated energy system will enable the existing wind-to-heat infrastructure to fully utilize all wind energy generated to heat community buildings in the Cup'iq village of Mekoryuk, located on Nunivak Island in the Bering Sea approximately 30 miles off Alaska's coast. The two turbines have been operated by AVEC since 2009 and require repowering.
Performance is scheduled from July 1, 2027, through July 1, 2031, at Mekoryuk, Alaska.
