About this award

This federal Project Grant award of $499,320 was provided by the Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E), CFDA 81.135, to Lithios Inc. located in Medford, MA. The funding supports the development of "Advanced Lithium Extraction (ALE)", a new electrochemical technology to selectively extract lithium from difficult feedstocks with high purity. The goal is to help overcome limitations in current lithium extraction methods and support more sustainable and domestic lithium supply chains for battery production. The project will be conducted from August 2024 to February 2026 at Lithios Inc.'s facilities.

Description

Title: ''advanced lithium extraction for domestic supply chains and battery circularity'' lithios aims to overcome these limitations with advanced lithium extraction (ALE), a disruptive new technology using electrochemistry to separate lithium from difficult feedstocks with unprecedented selectivity. The brine is FED into an electrochemical stack, where a voltage is applied to capture lithium ions in a battery-like electrode. After extraction, the brine is displaced by a dilute "recovery" solution, as the voltage is reversed to release the lithium and produce a highly pure stream of lithium salts.
