The Rural Utilities Service (RUS) awarded $2.255 million to Akiak Native Community on September 26, 2025, under the Water and Waste Disposal Systems for Rural Communities program (CFDA 10.760) to support combination water and wastewater infrastructure development in Akiak, Alaska. The project will be completed by September 26, 2027. This funding supports the delivery of critical water supply and waste disposal infrastructure improvements to serve the rural Alaskan village, with the goal of ensuring reasonable user costs for residents while addressing community health and sanitary needs.
The Water and Waste Disposal Systems program provides loan and grant funds to rural communities that demonstrate financial need and lack adequate water and waste infrastructure. As a federally recognized tribal government, Akiak Native Community qualifies as an eligible recipient under the program's targeting criteria for rural and financially disadvantaged communities. The awarded funding will support the design, development, and/or construction of essential water and wastewater treatment systems necessary to serve the village's population and improve public health outcomes in this remote Alaskan location.
