Description

Community project funding/congressionally directed spending - construction - the existing HVAC system serving the surgery department at whidbeyhealth medical center does not have dehumidification capabilities and currently tries to use the central chilled water plant for this purpose. This causes the chilled water plant to operate well into the heating season when IT would otherwise be off. The ventilation system's inability to provide reliable climate control in each of the surgery suites and the surgery department as a whole have caused delays and cancellations of critical surgeries needed in the coupeville / island county communities of washington state. The air handling unit (AH-2) that serves the surgery department within whidbey health medical center is a custom haakon airpak unit installed in 1996 and supplies 7,000 CFM to the surgery department. This unit has a steam pre-heat and a chilled water coil. The AHU has a humidifier. The surgery department has zone control through the 26 VAV terminal units, 12 with electrical RE-heat coils totaling 59.5 KW. This unit is controlled by siemens controls. The 15 HP supply fan and 3 HP return fan are controlled by their respective VFD. This unit has surpassed its rated useful service life and does not ventilate the area to the code required amount. This project will replace the existing ventilation system for the surgery department with new equipment capable of meeting the current code requirements and tempering the air in each of the surgery suites. This will include demo of the existing systems in accordance with the hospitals guidelines to minimize downtime, structural upgrades to support the increased weight of the equipment, mechanical installation of the equipment including new laminar flow hoods in each surgery suite, plumbing to extend the heating hot water loop to the new equipment, electrical installation, roofing, automated controls work, interior finish work, tab, and commissioning. These improvements will bring the surgery department up to code and provide relia BLE thermostatic control in the surgery suites. Project benefits will include built in redundancy with fan arrays for the supply and return fans, system will now be connected to central heating plant and central cooling plant. These improvements will be extremely energy efficient, giving the individual surgery suites dehumidification and supplemental cooling allowing chillers to be used less.
