Description
Community project funding/congressionally directed spending - construction - seminole state college (SSC) intends to address oklahoma's nursing shortage by increasing availability of on-line course work, doubling graduation capacity, and increasing the speed to advanced nursing licensure. Funding is requested to support nursing education at SSC to address oklahoma's healthcare workforce shortage through a cooperative effort of educational and community partnerships. The purpose of this project is to allow every student, every available option, at success by having access to well-equipped simulation labs and qualified teachers/personnel to run them. Currently, no funding is allocated to the creation and expansion of the current laboratory. Students are often asked to share manikins and equipment. A fully equipped lab would allow students a much more engaging experience to learn skills and would provide a foundation for successful expansion of the nursing program and sustain practices employed to increase the number of successful nursing graduates. Over the next three years, SSC will utilize the funding to remodel a current classroom into simulation labs. By creating and equipping a simulation lab experience the nursing program not only gives students the tools and resources to learn but creates an engaging learning environment that enhances the retention and successful nclex pass rate of these students. Along with the enhanced laboratory setting, the plan is to provide certification training to at least 2 nursing faulty per year. Performance benchmarks for the next three years include increasing enrollment and the nclex pass rate in the program by 10% each year and increasing applications to the program by 15% each year. At the end of each year, the program will be assessed to determine best practices and next steps to help ensure the performance benchmarks are met.
