COMMUNITY PROJECT FUNDING/CONGRESSIONALLY DIRECTED SPENDING - CONSTRUCTION - ADDRESS: ROCKLAND COMMUNITY COLLEGE 145 COLLEGE RD. SUFFERN, NY 10901-3620 PROJECT DIRECTOR NAME DR. MAUREEN KRONING, DEAN, SCHOOL NURSING HEALTH AND WELLNESS CONTACT PHONE NUMBERS (845) 574-4000 EMAIL ADDRESS MAUREEN.KRONING@SUNYROCKLAND.EDU WEBSITE ADDRESS, IF APPLICABLE WWW.SUNYROCKLAND.EDU GRANT PROGRAM FUNDS REQUESTED $3,000,000 ROCKLAND COMMUNITY COLLEGE'S NURSING SIMULATION LABORATORY PROJECT WILL PREPARE NURSING STUDENTS TO COMPETENTLY ENTER THE HEALTHCARE WORKFORCE, A WORKFORCE IN SIGNIFICANT NEED OF NURSING PERSONNEL. RESEARCH SHOWS THAT THERE IS AN IMMEDIATE NEED FOR A SUSTAINABLE PIPELINE OF LOCALLY EDUCATED REGISTERED NURSES TO FILL OPEN NURSING POSITIONS IN HEALTHCARE FACILITIES WITHIN THE DISTRICT. WITHOUT ENOUGH QUALIFIED NURSES, THE LOCAL HEALTHCARE SYSTEM HAS LESS FLEXIBILITY AND ABILITY TO ADAPT TO MEET COMMUNITY HEALTHCARE NEEDS LIKE THOSE PRESENTED BY THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC. EVEN IN NON-PANDEMIC TIMES, THE AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF COLLEGES OF NURSING REPORTS THAT LOWER LEVELS OF NURSE STAFFING CORRELATES WITH INCREASED PATIENT MORBIDITY AND MORTALITY. INVESTMENT IN OUR REGION'S FUTURE NURSES ENSURES THAT DISTRICT RESIDENTS WILL CONTINUE TO HAVE ACCESS TO WORLD-CLASS HEALTHCARE IN THE FACE OF NATIONWIDE NURSING SHORTAGES. THE NURSING PROGRAM ALIGNS WITH RCC'S MAJOR ROLE WITHIN THE COMMUNITY BY PROVIDING QUALITY AND ACCESSIBLE EDUCATION FOR THOSE WANTING TO ENTER THE HEALTHCARE INDUSTRY. THE NURSING PROGRAM CONTRIBUTES TO THE WORKFORCE SUPPLY OF WELL-PREPARED, DIVERSE AND QUALIFIED HEALTHCARE PROFESSIONALS IN OUR REGION. IN LIGHT OF THE COVID PANDEMIC, THERE HAS BEEN AN INCREASED NEED FOR ALTERNATIVES TO CLINICAL PLACEMENTS IN HEALTHCARE FACILITIES. DUE TO LIMITED CLINICAL PLACEMENTS, COLLEGES MUST BE CREATIVE WITH STUDENT EXPERIENCES TO ENSURE THEY ARE PREPARED AND ABLE TO ENTER THE HEALTHCARE WORKFORCE WITH COMPETENCE AND SKILL. THIS LABORATORY WILL PROVIDE NURSING STUDENTS WITH SIMULATED EXPERIENCES IN HEALTHCARE SITUATIONS THAT THEY WILL FACE WHEN ENTERING THE NURSING WORKFORCE. IT ALSO HELPS NARROW THE GAP BETWEEN THEORY AND PRACTICE AND ALLOWS STUDENTS TO BUILD ON THEIR SELF-ESTEEM AND CONFIDENCE WHEN LEARNING HOW TO SAFELY AND COMPETENTLY CARE FOR PATIENTS. EXPANDING STUDENTS' SIMULATION EXPERIENCES IN THE LABORATORY WILL HELP REINFORCE THEORETICAL CONCEPTS AND PROMOTE CLINICAL PROBLEM SOLVING AND CRITICAL THINKING IN A SUPPORTIVE AND REALISTIC ENVIRONMENT. FINALLY, THE EXPANSION OF THE NURSING SIMULATION LABORATORY WILL ALLOW RCC TO DOUBLE THE AMOUNT OF TIME THAT STUDENTS ARE ABLE TO SPEND LEARNING IN THE SIMULATION LABORATORY.
