COMMUNITY PROJECT FUNDING/CONGRESSIONALLY DIRECTED SPENDING - CONSTRUCTION - THE PURPOSE OF THIS PROJECT IS TO ENHANCE THE CAPABILITIES OF THE ERIC MUNOZ TRAUMA CENTER AT UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL BY MAKING CHANGES TO THE CURRENT INFRASTRUCTURE THAT WILL ALLOW MORE RAPID INTERVENTIONS. USING THE "GOLDEN HOUR" CONCEPT, WHERE MORTALITY IS DECREASED THE EARLIER DEFINITIVE (I.E. SURGERY) CARE IS RENDERED, THE CHANGES WE PROPOSE BRING US CLOSER TO THE BEGINNING OF THE "HOUR" RATHER THAN THE END. AS SUCH, THE PROJECT WILL PRIMARILY FOCUS ON CONVERTING THE CURRENT SHOCK TRAUMA TREATMENT AREA FROM 286 SQUARE FEET TO 458 SQUARE FEET, THEREBY ALLOWING US TO CONVERT THE SPACE INTO A FUNCTIONAL OPERATING ROOM. THE NEW SPACE WOULD PROVIDE THE FUNCTIONALITY NEEDED FOR AN ENTIRE OPERATING ROOM TEAM TO CIRCULATE FREELY AROUND A CENTRAL SURGICAL FIELD AND IMPROVE THE POSITIONING OF NEEDED SURGICAL EQUIPMENT. WE PROPOSE TO ENHANCE AND ADD NEW SURGICAL DEVICES, IMPROVE LIGHTING, AND UPDATE TECHNOLOGY TO FURTHER IMPROVE SURGICAL PERFORMANCE AND OUTCOMES. THE SPACE WILL BE BACKED UP 100% BY GENERATOR POWER TO ENSURE THE ROOMS ABILITY TO STAY FUNCTIONAL DURING NATURAL DISASTERS AND POWER OUTAGES. FINALLY, WE WILL UPGRADE THE HVAC SYSTEM TO CURRENT REGULATORY STANDARDS FOR OPERATING ROOMS. ADDITIONALLY, THE PROJECT SEEKS TO IMPROVE OUTCOMES FOR LESS SEVERE TRAUMA PATIENTS BY OFFERING AN ENHANCED TREATMENT SPACE. THE TRAUMA TREATMENT BAYS WILL HAVE IMPROVED LIGHTING AND VISIBILITY ALLOWING THE ENTIRE CARE TEAM TO FOLLOW THE PATIENT ON ONE DATA DISPLAY. PROPOSED IMPROVEMENTS AND UPDATES TO ELECTRICAL RECEPTACLES, MEDICAL GASES AND SURGICAL SUPPLIES WILL IMPROVE FLEXIBILITY OF THE SPACE AND ALSO ALLOW FOR A RAPID CENSUS INCREASE DURING CATASTROPHIC EVENTS. THE ADDITION OF TWO PATIENT HOLDING BAYS FOR USE AFTER STABILIZATION WILL ENABLE MORE CRITICALLY INJURED PATIENTS TO FLOW INTO THE TRAUMA TREATMENT BAYS. THIS AREA WILL ALSO HAVE UPGRADED TECHNOLOGY AND LIGHTING IMPROVEMENTS. SUPPORT SPACES WILL BE RECONFIGURED AND RELOCATED TO ACCOMMODATE TH E CHANGES PROPOSED IN THE SHOCK TRAUMA TREATMENT AREA AND TRAUMA BAYS. ULTIMATELY, BY CREATING A SPACE THAT WILL ALLOW MORE RAPID INTERVENTION FOR ALL OUR CRITICALLY ILL TRAUMA PATIENTS, HEALTH OUTCOMES WILL IMPROVE FOR THE PATIENTS OF OUR TRAUMA CENTER.
