Description

Community project funding/congressionally directed spending - construction - the center for better health and wellness is located in the city of benton harbor, michigan, which is home to approximately 9,800 people, of which 85% are african american and 45% live in poverty. Like many other african american communities, benton harbor was hard HIT by the pandemic deepening and exacerbating existing health, social and economic inequities historically endured by the community. The center for better health and wellness (CBHW) will help to mitigate those inequities by providing health care, including primary care, cardiovascular care, mental health care, other specialty care and integrative non-medical services. The CBHW will also provide access to culinary medicine and nutritional education, as well as social navigation supports which will facilitate residents' access to housing, food and other services and resources required for good health. All services will be provided in a culturally appropriate manner. This project will address the needs identified in the spectrum health lakeland's 2022-2024 community health needs assessment, specifically access to healthcare services, mental health care, food and nutrition services, and social cohesion.
