TO INCREASE CAPACITY TO TRAIN MORE HEALTHCARE WORKERS, BLUEFIELD STATE COLLEGE ACQUIRED THE FORMER BLUEFIELD REGIONAL MEDICAL CENTER FROM PRINCETON COMMUNITY HOSPITAL TO CONVERT UNUSED SPACE TO AN EDUCATIONAL FACILITY IN JUNE 2021. MOST CLINICAL OPERATIONS AT THE BLUEFIELD REGIONAL MEDICAL CENTER CLOSED IN 2019-2020. THE COLLEGE WILL CONTROL AND OCCUPY APPROXIMATELY 150,000 GROSS SQUARE FEET IN THE MAIN BUILDING AND ADDITIONAL SQUARE FOOTAGE IN SEVERAL ADJACENT BUILDINGS. BLUEFIELD STATE UNIVERSITY (BSU) CURRENTLY OFFERS PROGRAMS IN HEALTH CARE ADMINISTRATION, HEALTH CARE EDUCATION, IMAGING SCIENCE, RADIOLOGIC TECHNOLOGY, NUCLEAR MEDICINE, AND NURSING. THIS FACILITY WILL ALLOW OVER TIME FOR BSU NURSING DEPARTMENT TO EXPAND ITS ACADEMIC PROGRAMMING AND TECHNOLOGY/EQUIPMENT UPGRADES. ALSO, THE ADDITION OF OTHER HEALTHCARE PROGRAMS INCLUDING, DENTAL HYGIENE, MAMMOGRAPHY, RESPIRATORY THERAPY, AND SURGICAL TECHNOLOGY. THE CAMPUS DEVELOPMENT PLAN UPDATE RECOMMENDS THE FOLLOWING BUILDING PROJECTS FOR THE BLUEFIELD STATE MEDICAL EDUCATION CENTER. CONVERT FLOOR TWO TO ACCOMMODATE FOR THE DELIVERY OF COURSES LARGELY RELATED TO NURSING AND ALLIED HEALTH SCIENCES, FACULTY OFFICE SPACE AND CONSTRUCT A NEW COMMUTER STUDENT ENTRANCE TO MEDICAL EDUCATION CENTER. THIS PORTIONS OF THE SECOND FLOOR PROVIDE SIGNIFICANT SPACE FOR BSU NURSING DEPARTMENT TO GROW AND EXPAND THE PROGRAMS BSU OFFERS. IT IS THE INTENTION OF BSU TO OFFER OTHER ALLIED HEALTH PROGRAMS AND THERE IS THE NEED OF ARCHITECTURAL RESTRUCTURE AND BUILD OUT OF THE EXISTING FACILITY TO ACCOMMODATE PROGRAMS SUCH AS RESPIRATORY THERAPY, SURGICAL TECHNOLOGY, MEDICAL LABORATORY TECHNOLOGY AS WELL AS OTHERS BASED UPON THE WORKFORCE NEEDS ASSESSMENT. THESE FUNDS WILL ALLOW BSU THE OPPORTUNITY TO EXPAND ITS REA CH AND ACHIEVE THE GOAL OF ENROLLMENT GROWTH AND EXPAND ITS ACADEMIC PROGRAMMING TO ALIGN WITH BSU STRATEGIC PLAN.
