SIMILAR TO OTHER HEALTH CARE FACILITIES IN THE U.S. AND HAWAII, KUAKINI MUST MAINTAIN A SAFE ENVIRONMENT FOR THE CONTINUED DELIVERY OF HEALTH CARE SERVICES TO ITS PATIENTS / COMMUNITY DURING TIMES OF STATEWIDE OR ISLANDWIDE DISASTERS AND COMMUNITY EMERGENCIES. ONE OF THE MAJOR SAFETY RISKS IS THE LOSS OF ELECTRICAL POWER WHICH IMPACTS THE DELIVERY AND QUALITY OF THE HEALTH SERVICES PROVIDED TO THE COMMUNITY. THIS IS THE REASON FOR KUAKINI INSTALLING TWO NEW EMERGENCY GENERATORS TO PROVIDE EMERGENCY POWER DURING DISASTERS AS WELL AS ELECTRICAL BLACKOUTS AND ELECTRICAL GRID OUTAGES; THIS PHASE 1 OF THE KUAKINI MEDICAL CENTER EMERGENCY GENERATOR REPLACEMENT PROJECT WAS COMPLETED AT A TOTAL COST OF $4.98 MILLION. THE PURPOSE OF PHASE 2 OF THE PROJECT IS TO REPLACE THE EXISTING EMERGENCY GENERATOR AND ITS FUEL STORAGE TANK (WHICH ARE OVER 41 YEARS OLD) THAT PROVIDE EMERGENCY BACKUP POWER TO KUAKINI'S LONG TERM CARE FACILITIES THAT ARE LOCATED IN A BUILDING NEXT TO THE ACUTE CARE HOSPITAL. THE PROJECT INCLUDES THE CONNECTION OF THE MEDICAL CENTER'S NEW EMERGENCY GENERATORS TO THE ADJACENT BUILDING THAT HOUSES KUAKINI'S SKILLED NURSING FACILITY, INTERMEDIATE CARE FACILITY, AND RESIDENTIAL HOME, AS WELL AS (1) AN ACUTE CARE NURSING UNIT OPERATED BY ANOTHER COMMUNITY HOSPITAL, THE QUEEN'S MEDICAL CENTER, (2) UNIVERSITY OF HAWAII JOHN A. BURNS SCHOOL OF MEDICINE'S HYPERBARIC TREATMENT CENTER, (3) UNIVERSITY OF HAWAII JOHN A. BURNS SCHOOL OF MEDICINE'S GERIATRIC MEDICINE DEPARTMENT, AND (4) AN OUTPATIENT DIALYSIS CENTER CURRENTLY IN CONSTRUCTION; AND THE REMOVAL OF THE EXISTING EMERGENCY GENERAT OR AND FUEL STORAGE TANK. PHASE 2 OF THE PROJECT WILL PROVIDE A MINIMUM OF 96 HOURS OF EMERGENCY POWER AND PROVIDE FOR THE CONTINUED OPERATION OF THE AIR CONDITIONING SYSTEM FOR THE ENTIRE BUILDING. THE FUNDING OF THIS PHASE 2 OF THE PROJECT WILL ASSURE THE CONTINUITY OF HEALTH CARE SERVICES AT KUAKINI'S LONG TERM CARE FACILITIES AND MAINTAINING A SAFE ENVIRONMENT FOR THE LONG TERM CARE RESIDENTS DURING DISASTERS AND EMERGENCIES.
