Women small farmers in the chapada diamantina region of bahia, brazil, currently lack sufficient opportunities to earn income and access markets for their coffee products

This Project Grant from the Inter-American Foundation (IAF) provides $249,800 to the Associação do Desenvolvimento Agrícola e Comunitário de Lagoa da Boa Vista (ADAC) community association to empower women smallholder coffee farmers in Brazil's Chapada Diamantina region through May 2024. As part of IAF's Sustainable Agriculture and Women Investing in Growth and Security initiatives, ADAC will provide technical skills and processing capabilities to add value to green coffee beans—including smaller, previously unmarketable beans—into a cosmetic oil base product. This award falls under the IAF Assistance for Overseas Programs (CFDA 85.750) to strengthen relationships and support self-help efforts among peoples in the Western Hemisphere through community-led solutions that expand economic opportunities, leadership skills, and financial autonomy for women producers.

The IAF supports community-led solutions for women producers to expand their economic opportunities, leadership skills, and financial autonomy in brazil. Our grantee associação do desenvolvimento agrícola E comunitário DE lagoa DA BOA vista (ADAC), a community association led by women, is providing its women producers with technical skills and the capacity to process green coffee beans-including otherwise unsaleable small beans-into a value-added oil used as a base product in cosmetics. This grant is part of the IAF's sustainable agriculture initiative to improve the livelihoods of smallholder farmers, and IAF's women investing in growth and security (WINGS) initiative to empower women as business and community leaders.
