About this award

The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) awarded Baldwin Wallace University $149,982 under the Promotion of the Humanities Teaching and Learning Resources and Curriculum Development program (CFDA 45.162) on August 1, 2025, for implementation of a core competency and minor in Health and Medical Humanities. The three-year project, which concludes July 31, 2028, builds upon a successful NEH Connections planning grant completed in 2023–24 and leverages the university's proximity to Cleveland's extensive healthcare network to develop curricula, courses, and experiential learning opportunities in health and medical humanities accessible to students across multiple disciplines.

The initiative will establish a core competency in Health and Medical Humanities integrated into Baldwin Wallace University's new core curriculum, available to all undergraduate students, and a specialized minor program grounded in humanistic learning outcomes designed to appeal to majors in humanities, health sciences, natural sciences, nursing, and business. Deliverables will include new and revised courses, development of student-centered programming, and partnerships with external regional healthcare institutions to create applied learning experiences that advance understanding of the humanities' role in health and medical contexts.
