About this award

Hawaii Community College will utilize a $147,157 National Endowment for the Humanities Project Grant under the Promotion of the Humanities Teaching and Learning Resources and Curriculum Development program to engage in cultural heritage preservation and education efforts centered around the newly established Palamanui Forest Preserve from June 2023 through May 2026. Key deliverables include developing digital archives and maps of ancient and modern trails within the preserve, establishing a community speaker series and workdays focused on the region's indigenous Hawaiian cultural history, and providing professional development for faculty to incorporate the preserve into curricula. These products and services aim to recognize the forest area as a cultural heritage site and connect students, educators and the local community to the rich cultural traditions and endangered ecosystem it contains.
