Description

This project provides funding to industry initiatives for science and math education to implement its project, which will design, demonstrate, and disseminate environmental education practices, methods, and techniques, that will serve to increase environmental literacy and encourage behavior that will benefit the environment in santa clara, alameda, and contra costa counties in the BAY area, california. The grantee will do this by hosting one-week externships consisting of environmental and educational activities with our partner baywork at water agencies for local 6-12TH grade teachers at title i schools. During each day, teachers meet industry professionals, tour wastewater plants, freshwater reservoirs, and dams. They will work with a curriculum coach to create relevant lesson plans for their classrooms that prepare students to take responsible actions around water resources and bring awareness for water utility careers. Teachers have the unique ability to change the trajectory of their students' lives and are aptly positioned to influence career decisions. This project will better equip them to inspire their students to pursue water and wastewater careers and ultimately become watershed stewards.activities:this project will increase public awareness and knowledge about environmental issues in santa clara, alameda, and contra costa counties in the BAY area, california and provide students and teachers the skills necessary to make informed decisions and to take responsible actions. Activities to be performed during this project period include: two 5-day water week externships introducing teachers to water and wastewater careers and environmental stewardship practices, additional one day teacher workshops, and the implementation of curriculum and youth leadership and development programs. Subrecipient:our subawards will go to three local 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations: the krause center for innovation (KCI), a part of foothill community college focused on teacher education, the tech interactive, a science museum, and resource area for teachers (raft), the 'costco' of lost-cost educator supplies. We have budgeted for three fixed amount subawards to be funded on milestone completion, for exactly $5,000 each, adding up to exactly 25% of the EPA funds requested. These organizations have verbally committed to tasks related to the project for the proposed funding amounts.outcomes:IT is anticipated that this project will result in the following deliverables and expected outcomes of the project include: the main short-term outcomes of these activities are to increase students' knowledge of the impact their actions can have on their local watershed and to increase their awareness of water utility career paths. The medium- and long-term outcomes are to inspire students to become environmental stewards, possibly through a water utility career. The outputs delivered by ignited, baywork, and the subrecipient nonprofits will equip teachers to develop and deliver lesson plans. Teachers' lesson plans and classroom implementation will enable US to reach our educational goal (career development) by featuring one or more water utility careers in the lessons and providing connections to role models in these fields.
