This project provides funding for the kansas department of health and environment's (kdhe) response program that includes timely survey and inventory of brownfield sites, which are properties whose expansion, redevelopment, or reuse may be complicated by the presence of hazardous substances. IT also includes oversight and enforcement authorities to ensure that response actions protect human health and the environment; resources to provide meaningful public involvement; and mechanisms for approval of cleanup plans and verification of complete responses. The objective of this project is to assist in remediating and redeveloping brownfield sites throughout the state of kansas. Direct beneficiaries of this program include the recipient as well as kansas residents and local communities. This bipartisan infrastructure law (BIL) funded project will allow the state to carry out section 128(a) activities, including building response program capacity, oversee brownfields cleanups, and conduct site assessment and cleanup activities otherwise not addressed by traditional 128(a) funding.activities:the BIL 128(a) funding will ensure that kdhe can enhance and fulfill the vision and mission by achieving a goal of addressing and remediating contamination otherwise not addressed with traditional funding and promoting redevelopment for economic improvement in underserved areas. Additionally, kdhe will perform five asbestos containing material (ACM) cleanups; develop and prioritize a universe of eligible sites with abandoned underground storage tanks (UST) for removal; and create and provide data to the public that will assist in ensuring human health and the environment are protected. Subrecipient:no subawards are included in this assistance agreement.outcomes:the kansas department of health and environment (kdhe) will update and expand their current brownfields inventory; conduct at least 5 ACM cleanups; develop and prioritize an inventory of eligible UST sites for removal; and purchase a geoprobe tool for identifying and documenting the presence of contamination in soil, groundwater, and vapor.
