DESCRIPTION:GROUNDWORK ELIZABETH (GWE), ITS PROJECT PARTNERS AND SUBAWARD RECIPIENT WILL BRING TOGETHER A DIVERSE COALITION OF COMMUNITY STAKEHOLDERS THAT WILL INCREASE PARTICULATE MATTER (PM) MONITORING, DEFINE PM HEALTH COSTS IN ELIZABETH (NEAR PORT-ELIZABETH MARINE TERMINAL), EXPLORE BIODIESEL AS A STRATEGY TO REDUCE EMISSIONS, AND DEVELOP A COMMUNITY ACTION PLAN FOR REDUCING PM IN THE COMMUNITY. THE PROJECT WILL ALSO INCREASE KNOWLEDGE AND AWARENESS OF AIR QUALITY AND ITS HEALTH EFFECTS IN THE COMMUNITY.ACTIVITIES:GROUNDWORK ELIZABETH (GWE) AND ITS SUBAWARD RECIPIENT WILL DEPLOY AIR MONITORS THROUGHOUT THE COMMUNITY TO MONITOR PM LEVELS AROUND THE PORT. THE CONTRACT RECIPIENT WILL MODEL THE IMPACTS OF DIESEL PM WITHIN THE COMMUNITY AND THE BENEFITS OF SWITCHING TO ALTERNATIVE FUELS. SUBRECIPIENT:THE ENVIRONMENTAL AND OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH SCIENCE INSTITUTE (EOSHI) AND THE CENTER FOR ENVIRONMENTAL EXPOSURE AND DISEASE (CEED) WITHIN RUTGERS UNIVERSITY WILL PROVIDE TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE FOR IMPROVED CHARACTERIZATION OF LOCAL AIR QUALITY FOCUSED ON PARTICULATE MATTER AND DIESEL EXHAUST AIR POLLUTION. THEY WILL ASSIST WITH DEVELOPMENT OF A QUALITY ASSURANCE PROJECT PLAN (QAPP), TRAINING OF GWE STAFF AND GREEN TEAMS ON FUNDAMENTALS OF AIR POLLUTION AND HEALTH, SITING AND DEPLOYMENT OF PURPLE AIR MONITORS, TROUBLESHOOTING THE MONITORS, AND ANALYSIS AND INTERPRETATION OF DATA.OUTCOMES:THE PM MONITORING WILL HELP DEFINE PM HEALTH COSTS IN ELIZABETH (NEAR PORT-ELIZABETH MARINE TERMINAL). THE CONTRACTED STUDY WILL EXPLORE BIODIESEL AS A STRATEGY TO REDUCE EMISSIONS. DIRECT BENEFICIARIES OF THIS PROJECT ARE THE COMMUNITY NEAR THE PORT-ELIZABETH MARINE TERMINAL.
