This Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation's (NSF) STEM Education program (CFDA 47.076) provides $300,809 to Saint Louis University to explore the integration of reconfigurable sensorimotor interfaces into educational STEM simulations for digital learning platforms. The goal is to develop low-cost, reconfigurable "teletangible" haptic devices that can be used to embody STEM concepts and support the learning of both sighted students and those with blindness or low...
The National Science Foundation awarded a 5-year, $481,175 CAREER grant under the STEM Education (formerly Education and Human Resources) program to the Board of Trustees of Illinois State University to improve the accessibility of technology-mediated high school science education for blind and low-vision students. The project aims to: (1) investigate teachers' knowledge about creating "born accessible" technology-mediated science classes, and (2) develop opportunities for pre- and...
This federal Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation (NSF) under the STEM Education (CFDA 47.076) program is funding the development and testing of software and hardware tools to enable faculty, staff, postdoctoral research fellows, and graduate students who are blind or have low vision to generate, identify, and manipulate digital data patterns and trends in the fields of chemistry, math, computer and information sciences. The $741,159 award to Newhaptics Corp and the...
This $239,973 Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Social, Behavioral, and Economic Sciences (CFDA 47.075) program will support the development of a new artificial intelligence-based tool to improve collaborative learning experiences and outcomes for deaf students in university-level science courses. The project aims to address challenges around the lack of standard American Sign Language (ASL) terminology for many scientific concepts, which can hinder deaf...
The National Science Foundation awarded a $275,000 Project Grant to Alchemie Solutions, Inc. under the NSF Technology, Innovation, and Partnerships program (CFDA 47.084) to develop a system for generating alternative text descriptions of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) diagrams. The system will produce machine-readable configurations of diagram components and spatial relationships, and generate layered, text-based descriptions matched to a context-driven lexicon. The...
This $749,685 National Science Foundation project grant under the Technology, Innovation, and Partnerships program (CFDA 47.084) will fund the development of an Automated, Integrated, Multimodal Software (AIMS) system to improve inclusive access to information for persons with disabilities. Saint Louis University leads a consortium that includes software companies Vital, Unar Labs, and Viewplus Technologies to build a unified framework for authoring, converting, and delivering accessible content...
This $260,027 federal Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Social, Behavioral, and Economic Sciences (CFDA 47.075) program will support the development of a new artificial intelligence tool designed to improve collaborative learning experiences for deaf students in university-level science courses. The project aims to address challenges around the lack of standardized American Sign Language (ASL) signs for many scientific concepts, which can hinder deaf students'...
This $379,407 Project Grant awarded by the National Science Foundation (CFDA 47.076 - STEM Education) aims to improve the undergraduate chemistry classroom experience for deaf and hard of hearing (D/HH) students. The key products and services to be delivered through this 3-year project include: Developing a comprehensive sign language lexicon for general, organic, and biochemistry concepts and terminology to facilitate better comprehension and inclusion of D/HH students. Implementing methods...
This $1,000,000 Cooperative Agreement awarded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) under the Technology, Innovation, and Partnerships (TIP) program (CFDA 47.084) will enable Alchemie Solutions, Inc., a woman-owned small business, to develop an expandable system for generating detailed and standardized descriptions of STEM diagrams in interactive media. The goal is to provide real-time alternative text (alt text) generation for screen reader users and create an inclusive communication...
This Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CISE) Federal Grant Program (CFDA 47.070) provides $400,000 to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) to investigate methods and systems that allow blind and low-vision (BLV) users to build customized, interactive multisensory data representations spanning text, audio, and tactile modalities. The goal is to empower BLV individuals to engage in data analysis as richly...

KASI: COMBINING SOUND BASED AR & TACTILE PIECES FOR ACCESSIBLE VISUAL BASED STEM COMMUNICATION - THIS PHASE I PROJECT EXPANDS THE KASI LEARNING SYSTEM, WHICH USES AUDIO-BASED AUGMENTED REALITY (AR) OF PHYSICAL MANIPULATIVES, FOR INDEPENDENT EXPLORATION OF CHEMICAL DIAGRAMS WITH THREE-DIMENSIONAL FEATURES. THE GOAL OF THIS PROJECT IS TO SUPPORT BLIND/VISUALLY IMPAIRED (BVI) STUDENTS IN SCIENTIFIC DISCIPLINES FROM K-12, THROUGH COLLEGE, AND INTO EMPLOYMENT. THE OBJECTIVES ARE TO 1) DEVELOP THE KASI SYSTEM FOR USE IN COLLEGE-LEVEL CHEMISTRY COURSES BY CREATING A DIGITAL TOOL FOR DRAWING THREE-DIMENSIONAL CHEMICAL REPRESENTATIONS, DESIGNING NEW TACTILE PHYSICAL MANIPULATIVES, AND IMPLEMENTING CORRESPONDING COMPUTER VISION ALGORITHMS TO ASSESS AND GUIDE STUDENT LEARNING AND 2) VALIDATE THE FEASIBILITY OF THE KASI SYSTEM WITH BVI COLLEGE SCIENCE STUDENTS USING A MIXED METHODS STUDY. PROJECT OUTCOMES INCLUDE 1) AN INDEPENDENT METHOD FOR BVI STUDENTS TO EXPLORE AND CONSTRUCT CHEMICAL DIAGRAMS, 2) INCREASED COMMUNICATION BETWEEN BVI STUDENTS AND THEIR INSTRUCTORS AND THEIR STUDENT PEERS, 3) MORE BVI STUDENTS PARTICIPATING AND SUCCEEDING IN SCIENCE COURSES THAT ARE THE PRE-REQUISITE TO EMPLOYMENT IN STEM AND MEDICAL FIELDS, 4) PUBLISH FINDINGS OF SUCCESSFUL PRACTICES THAT SUPPORT STEM CAREER ADVANCEMENT FOR BVI STUDENTS. THE PRODUCT OF THIS PROJECT IS AN AUDIO-BASED AUGMENTED REALITY SYSTEM THAT USES INEXPENSIVE PHYSICAL MANIPULATIVES WITH WEB-BASED SOFTWARE AND NON-PROPRIETARY HARDWARE (CAMERA, MAGNETIC WHITEBOARD) FOR A SCALABLE METHOD OF ACCESSIBLE AND INCLUSIVE LEARNING TO HELP ALL STUDENTS TO SUCCEED IN STEM CAREERS.
